Hello!👋🏼
Here’s the first post in my series on “Public Speaking 1O1”
One of the hats I thoroughly enjoy wearing is that of Show Host/ Master of Ceremonies/ Moderator, that too for the past 20 years & this series is to pass on what I have learnt along the way.
A key element of effective public speaking is knowing who your audience is. Building a rapport with them can be challenging, but it’s essential. Whether you’re presenting at a conference, leading a workshop, or pitching a new idea, customizing your message to fit your audience can significantly enhance its impact.
Here are a few tips to help you connect with your audience:
Do your Research
Ask your Client questions
#TIP The more you know, the better equipped you will be.
How many attendees are expected?
What’s the male: female ratio?
What’s the age range?
Which industries/departments do they belong to?
Find out about the culture of the organization (if it’s a single Client company)
Understand their interests, needs, and pain points. This insight will help you craft a message that resonates.
Adapt Your Language
Use terminology and examples that are familiar to your audience.
#TIP Avoid jargon that might be confusing or off-putting.
Engage your audience with Questions
Encourage participation by asking questions. This not only makes your presentation interactive but also gives you a real-time understanding of your audience's thoughts and concerns.
#TIP Prepare the list of questions in advance and list out the possible responses. This way you can transition smoothly from question to question with the appropriate commentary.
Tell Relevant Stories
Sharing stories that relate to your audience's experiences can create a powerful connection and make your message more memorable.
#TIP if you don’t have a personal story to tell make sure you read as much as you can. This way you can cite examples from reliable sources.
Be Flexible
#TIP the best speakers are those who listen.
Be prepared to adjust your presentation based on audience reactions. If you notice a lack of engagement, switch tactics to re-capture their attention.
Remember that by knowing your audience, you can deliver a message that is both impactful and meaningful.
